What you need to know to order a custom LCD
In honor of putting money down on an LCD, I wanted to break down what I’ve learned about what it takes to order a bespoke LCD display.

Can’t stop, won’t stop with the clocks ><
I was doomscrolling AliExpress (don’t judge me) when I got the idea to build an acrylic Nixie-style clock.
-
Telling time with the Network Time Protocol
Because my eventual clock is going to get its time from the internet, we’re going to learn how to do it with this LCD.
-
Getting numbers on the HT1621 LCD controller
We’ve gone through some work getting the HT1621 up and running, but in the end, we’ve deciphered its secrets and we’re ready to put it to use.

Transhumans – Pablo Stanley
I needed a logo and had an astronaut vibe in my head. After scrolling through dozens of helmets I found one that struck all the right notes.
-
Deciphering the LCD on the PDC-6X1 development board
In order to figure out which memory addresses light up which segments, we’re going to have to test all 128 bits of memory.
-
Swimming in the liquid crystal sea
LCD’s are a different beast, so there are some new things to learn as we explore the HT1621, but nothing impossible to overcome.
-
Putting the drive in the TM1637 LED driver
Now we just have to do the part that makes the TM1637 display light up: write the code.
-
Bit banging the TM1637 LED driver to life
The hardware I plan on using in the future is a bit more complicated than a shift register, that’s why I’m shifting my attention to drivers.

Chaining the 74HC595 for fun and profit
With more than one 595 we can arbitrarily add output pins without using any additional outputs on our microcontroller.
